From Yard to Show Ring: Keeping Your Horse Happy, Organised & Stress-Free

There’s something really special about show days… the early mornings, the buzz around the lorry park, and that mix of excitement and nerves.

But if we’re honest, they can also be a bit chaotic.

Over time, I’ve realised that the difference between a stressful day and a smooth one often comes down to one thing: how well you’re set up.

From the moment you leave the yard to when you head home again, a few simple things can make all the difference, for both you and your horse.

A new environment can be a lot for horses. Different smells, different sounds, different routines… it’s no wonder some of them go off their food or feel unsettled.

That’s why I always focus on making their space feel as calm and familiar as possible.

  • A reliable hay setup

Having hay available in a way that’s easy and natural for them to eat is key. A mobile hay feeder is perfect for attaching to stable bars or gates,

keeping things tidy while encouraging consistent eating.

  • Something to keep them occupied

Standing around between classes can get boring quickly. A hay cushion-style feeder is great for keeping them gently entertained and mimicking more natural grazing behaviour.

  • Creating a calm space

A simple stable guard or drape can make a huge difference. It gives them a defined area, reduces distractions, and helps them settle much quicker.

Let’s be honest some of the stress of a show comes from not being able to find things when you need them.

A little bit of organisation goes a long way.

  • Bridle and tack storage

Having a proper bridle bag keeps everything clean, protected, and exactly where it should be.

  • Saddle pad storage

No more shoving pads into corners or pulling out damp or dusty ones. A dedicated saddle pad bag keeps them fresh, tidy, and ready to go.

  • Stable organisation

A hanging organiser is one of those things you don’t realise you need until you have one. Brushes, sprays, bits and pieces, all in one place and easy to grab.

It’s easy to focus on the show itself, but the journey plays a huge part in how your horse feels when you arrive.

A calm, comfortable travel setup can make all the difference, especially for longer days or busy venues.

  • Easy access to hay while travelling

Keeping your horse able to eat naturally during travel helps them stay settled and relaxed. A hay tray or mobile hay feeder is ideal for this, giving them something familiar while keeping things contained.

  • Keeping things clean and manageable

Hay everywhere in a lorry or trailer quickly turns into a mess (and extra work at the end of the day). A hay catcher is one of those simple additions that saves time, reduces waste, and keeps your space tidy.

  • Setting the tone for the day

Horses pick up on everything and a smoother, calmer journey often leads to a more settled horse when you arrive. It’s one of those small things that has a bigger impact than you’d expect.

If you’re getting ready for show season, it’s worth taking a bit of time to think about your setup before you go.

A few small changes from travel to stable setup can make a big difference to how the whole day feels.
